The Four Bells, Woodborough
The Four Bells is situated in the village of Woodborough just a few miles out of Sussex. Serving its community and those at large it strikes a hard to find balance as it is a ‘local’ and pub hub where views and spirits are exchanged openly and the food unceremoniously exceptional. No surprise then that it has won a cluster of awards and its popularity matches the wide range of ales.
Loving the Local
The Four Bells in Woodborough is a pub i’ve known for many years as my sister used to live in the village. I’d shared many memorable (and equally some less so) weekends there with her and friends but the dynamic shift that occurred with Craig and his wife Gaynor took over was just what it needed to rattle the old, herald in the new and shake off any hangovers of the past.

Right from the start of their takeover there’s been the spirit to continually improve with an adventurous spirit the ingredients on the menu and how the place is physically run, but never at the expense of the customers, jokes aside of course. There’s a lightness, an unrivalled unpretentiousness towards The Four Bells and the staff all appear proud in its maintainance. The wit and banter of the landlord is as lively as any seen at The Comedy Store.

With guest ales appearing regularly there is never a lull, Craig’s frenetic activity would never allow it; and the impressive wine list is not out of reach in price, range or delivery as it’s available by the glass or different sizes of carafe.

The food is sourced locally so fresh and colorful, and with the meat coming from a top notch butcher, seasonal game, log fires during the winter and an expansive beer garden with slides for the kids in the summer, there’s something for everyone anytime of the year.

Getting out of town and getting local makes you realize the value of more form and less fuss, and it’s all here at The Four Bells.
